going live, hopefully

So I will hopefully have this live in the next day. I think I should be going to bed now, as it is way past a normal bed time for work… I have almost everything done, the front end is good for now (I plan on expanding it a lot more) and the back end stuff is almost all done. I just need to figure out a way to upload images and log in from a computer not on my home network =\ I also need to migrate my dad’s Wordpress files over and the database. That will have to occur after I get home tomorrow in the few hours I will be in the apartment, else this may not be visible until next Wednesday…

About that, I am going to be in Anaheim this weekend and the first half of next week. I will be there attending ASIS, its a large security trade show that I will be at for my company. It is usual to have new employees who haven’t seen the security industry to experience it through a large trade show. I am going to be going down to help set up the very elaborate booth we have and then spend two days demoing our software to potential customers. I will try to put a post up in that time, but it will really depend on either this being visible or my energy levels… (now lets see if this properly submits fingers crossed)

a week with os x

So I have been using OS X on my netbook for something like a week now. I have used it primarily for watching video and browsing the web (which is pretty much as I had planned). The one major conclusion I cam to is that I don’t see whats so special about it… It isn’t anything better or worse than the other two OSes I use constantly (Windows 7 and Ubuntu). It looks pretty, but so do the other two. I find some of the restrictions annoying, in terms of control and there really aren’t any killer applications that change the way I use a computer. I use VLC for video, like I do in Linux and Windows, and I use Firefox for browsing, like I do in Linux and Windows. There isn’t anything that makes it stand alone, if anything it is lacking programs for things I use primarily. I use mIRC and X-Chat for IRC on Windows and Linux, with OS X, theres Colloquy (which is crap) and X-Chat Aqua, a weaker version of its older brother. Adium is a decent chat program, but nothing better than Trillian on Windows (I don’t like Pidgin, so it wins over Linux) and Skype is the same. It lacks Outlook, so I am stuck with either Thunderbird or just using the web client (which is almost better). I don’t like iTunes but there isn’t anything else for OS X since everyone is so enamered with iTunes…

Alright, enough with me ranting… I feel that OS X is a decent OS. It lacks a lot of the extensive options available for both Linux and Windows and feels very hindered by its locked down system, compared to the other two. I do like its Unix base, so the structure feels familiar and I can still get into the terminal goodness. Because of that, I can always fall back to terminal based applications like IRSSI (yeah Tang, that is an option for IRC, but I would rather stay away from the terminal for something like this). The real allure for me is the actual machine. It is a 10” 2 pound little menace. It can do most of the things I ask it and does so in a nice, light, travel sized case. I am looking forward to dragging this with me more places, and bringing up my wireless router to Purdue so that I can use it more from Kim’s room… Well, I will probably spend this coming weekend trying to get the server stable and next week trying to get this site out to the public (rather than just my private apartment sized audience :( ).

23rd birthday

So here I am, 23 years old. I am supposed to get my birthday off from work, but I have decided to take it off tomorrow instead (and get a glorious three day weekend). I will be heading up to Purdue tonight (tomorrow night) to spend some time with my girlfriend. It will be nice to have an extra day off, and next weekend is Labor day weekend, which will be pretty sweet too. 23 years doesn’t seem like anything special… I think most of my birthdays from now on will feel like this. Nothing momentous and my life is going to be pretty static from now on. I will be working and just celebrate my birthday with a few people if anything, and then back to work the next day.

For myself, I ordered an HP mini netbook. Its a super light weight, super under powered, super small little notebook (laptop). I picked it specifically because it comes with a weird Linux distro (rather than waste more money on another millionth XP license) and the RAM is upgradable to 2GB. I am probably going to try and experiment putting OS X on it and see how it feels. If I don’t like it, I will look into Jolicloud or just Ubuntu Netbook Remix. I will probably post about my experience sometime on here…

For my site, (I am actually posting this to the new site, so you guys are going to be reading it in the future =) I am trying to get my old computer stable as a server and am failing at doing so. I will probably eventually try to troubleshoot the problem and try to finish the code for this up and then point my router to the server instead of the old P3 shitbox. I still need to code up a proper gallery system (beyond the scratched together proof of concept I have right now) and put together a proper administrative system, so that I don’t have to manually input my entries like I am doing now… Well, I better sleep soon so that I will be ready to go up and see my awesome girlfriend tomorrow night…
