probably should write one

I should probably write an entry as I have neglected adding one for a bit and I told myself that after I finished migrating everything over to django I would write more frequently. I have not been doing anything exciting. I am wrapping up the rewrite of the web interface I have worked on for my job and will hopefully be able to move on soon. I am not sure what is next for me, my coworker asked what was in line and I have no clue. I have had the ongoing task of helping the web side grow up into a major player rather than a side note. Now that it is much more useful (I now default to using it for checking things) and stable, I can go on to other things, but what?

The integration I worked on with a company may require that I travel to Boston to help them with it, which I actually don’t want to do that badly. I know, I should be excited to travel to Boston and get away from the office, but I just think there will be too much unpleasant things to make up for any of the good that will come of it. I will mostly be stuck troubleshooting any problems they have and trying to work around features or tasks they spur on me that I am not prepared for. Doug thought that both of us should probably go out there since we split the development pretty evenly, but I doubt that the higher ups will be pleased with that idea. So for now, I am just waiting around.

I got my sofa a few days ago and have finished mounting my shelf and the speakers to the underside so now it is very pleasant to use my computer :D. I have recently started to want to get into cooking to some degree (not like gourmet chef stuff) so that it wouldn’t be so daunting to want to make myself something to eat. I made some coconut rice last night, which turned out alright, I think that the recipe called for too much garlic and I over cooked it just a bit (not burnt but the rice in the corner of the pot was a bit brown, so a small % of the rice). I am debating trying to make some Japanese curry sometime, but I need to find places that sell all the ingredients. I would try and do these things on weekends, but I seem to be always busy on weekends, so I shall see where it goes.

I added commenting and RSS the other day, so comment away/subscribe to the feed. I may also try and incorporate some more fancy javascript through this. I have noticed an awful color discrepancy with Firefox 3.5, so I may try and fiddle with that as well.

roller coaster day

So today has been quite a roller coaster. This morning, right before I was going to drag myself to work, I was called by a cop. He was calling to tell me that my car had been broken into over the night. I went down to talk to him and report what was stolen. (I am now without my beloved MP3 player) After talking to him, I went back upstairs to start making calls. I talked to my mom and arranged for her to pick me up so that I could use the extra car temporarily (we don’t have an extra car, my dad is just out of town). I called the office to tell them that I would be in much later, then I got to call my car insurance company (OH JOY!). I need to arrange a time to have a glass repair person come and fix the window. (The bastards broke the driver side too, so I can’t even man up and try to drive it to get it fixed) Needless to say, this morning sucked… I didn’t get into work until 2, an all time late for me and one that I hope to not repeat. Oddly enough, I was incredibly productive in the 4 hours I was there working and am almost done and ready to push this stuff out to the company we are integrating with (that is probably all I can say, maybe too much, but I don’t think many people actually read this). That is the end of the low part of the roller coaster.

After work, I was supposed to go play indoor ultimate for the new fall league. I had joined a team of kind of free agents who all were interested and we all just kind of played it like pick up. I hadn’t played in two months (mostly since I had only gotten my good glasses a week or so ago and did not want to try playing with shit ass eyesight) and was surprisingly good. I was throwing well and moving well. I feel really good about that and am looking forward to the fall league a lot more than the summer league, where I basically warmed the bench and felt like showing up was a waste of time. I also got to see that Adam Wainwright was pitching a 1 run 3 hit gem through the 8th inning and my beloved Cardinals had a 2-1 lead going into the ninth. The closer, Ryan Franklin, comes in and gets two solid outs, one out away… Matt Holliday drops a fly ball, basically losing the final out, and then Franklin lets the game go to hell, a horrid 3-2 hell where we lost the two games with the front running Cy Young candidates starting. This is going to take an amazing turn around for us to move on… (this whole end part is kind of a downer and was added randomly)

new monitor

So I had been using my two monitors a lot and was constantly feeling starved for desktop space. I would be juggling 5 or 6 windows on the two displays, throwing windows back and forth and getting generally lost where each window was. I finally decided I wanted to get the monitor I had been eyeing for a while, a 27” widescreen LCD. I was gifted enough to get free overnight shipping, but didn’t know (in my lack of experience with FedEx express) that I had to have someone sign for it. So I ended up driving to a Service Center to pick it up after work (I really wanted to play with it) and then dragged it back here and immediately hooked it up. It is glorious. I installed an application that lets me maximize windows to 1/2 the space of the big monitor and I put the two 17s in portrait on either side, so now I can have 4 windows open comfortably. It is great. I have my Firefox, IRC, Skype with Kim, and Foobar all open and visible. I had notepad, 2 browsers, and Foobar open earlier when I was doing some coding. I am really geeking out right now.

I need to build a small shelf to sit over my desk so I can put a lamp above the desk and mount my speakers above the monitors. Then I can probably de-clutter my desk some and really make it comfortable. I shall see. I think I may go after work tomorrow to scout the supplies at home depot, but the actual work may be next week, but who knows. I am getting pizza with my dad and sister tomorrow because she is in town for something. Then this weekend I am going to Purdue to see people. I will probably post more often in this now that I have moved it over to the awesome django code and have a majority of what I want in the control center section complete. Hopefully this entry goes through properly, I really don’t feel like debugging at this hour, I need to sleep >_>…
